Kennaway’s 1743 Blended Scotch Whisky

$475 AUD

43% ABV  75cl

Blended and bottled for Kennaway & Co. Ltd. of Exeter (and Glasgow) and then shipped to Italy to supply their importer there whose details are given on the back label. We estimate this bottle to be from the 1960s but we know of identical examples dating back to the 1940s and so this one could be earlier. There is also a later 12-year-old version, and other brands called “Top Hat” and “Scottish Castle”, the latter for the US market. The Benedictine shaped bottle is unusual for a Scotch whisky brand.

This product is located in the United Kingdom.

KENNAWAY & CO LTD

The prominence of “1743” in the brand name and on the label suggests that the company’s claim to be of such antiquity has validity. It was also known as the “House of Kennaway”.  We assume that they are one of the large number of wine and spirit merchants in the UK who had whisky blended and bottled for them under their own label, principally for their local customers but also, as in this case, for a bit of export business.

Kennaway and Son [ later Kennaway and Company] of Commercial Road and Palace Gate, Exeter were listed as wine and spirit merchants operating from 1888-1975. Prior to that Messrs. Kennaway and Company, as cloth and wine merchants of Palace Gate, Exeter, are shown variously as being in business from 1751-1835 and 1746-1829. Kennaway's Bonded Stores in Commercial Road, Exeter is a Grade II Listed Building now converted into 7 "luxury waterfront apartments”.
