Caperdonich 41 Year Old 1972 Tantalus

$2,650 AUD

53.7% 40 cl

Although there are still numerous independent bottlings of Caperdonich, which closed in 2002, not many have come close to this impressive age of 41 years drawn from cask 7458. This is a special release from Duncan Taylor, which was distilled in 1972, and is presented in an equally impressive wooden tantalus.

A tantalus is a wooden stand for spirit decanters with the defining feature of a lock and key. Many believe these stands were designed to limit unauthorised access to its precious contents by the servants or children of the house.

The Duncan Taylor Tantalus Collection contains exceptional single malt and single grain whiskies from some of Scotland’s most sought after, closed and rare distilleries. They are all bottled at natural cask strength and non-chill filtered.

The whiskies are presented in hand blown decanters, housed in an elegant hand-crafted Tantalus made from the very casks that matured the whiskies of this range and encased in leather sleeves, all exclusively designed for Duncan Taylor.

Caperdonich Distillery

Built to complement Glen Grant, and indeed known for a period as Glen Grant Number 2 distillery, Caperdonich never really came into its own, although it has always had its own small band of followers who have long recognised its unique qualities, if only as a second ranking malt destined inevitably for the blending halls.

Built in 1898 across the road from Glen Grant, it only lasted a few years before going silent in 1902. And so it remained until 1965 when demand for Glen Grant led to its reopening, still as Glen Grant No 2, after much refurbishment. Expansion to four stills took place and the distillery took on the name of Caperdonich in 1977. It carried on in that guise for nearly 25 years before being sold to Pernod Ricard in 2001. They promptly closed it down and sold the site to Forsyth’s, the coppersmiths of still making fame. Sadly, the site was demolished in 2011. However, the spirit lives on in the form of mainly independent bottlings of different years.
