Belgrove Oat Whisky 2014 - Historic

$525 AUD

58.4% ABV

500 ml

This is the original Belgrove Oat Whisky comprising oats grown, mashed, brewed and distilled all at Belgrove Distillery personally by Peter Bignell. And as if that were not enough, Peter has individually signed each label. Bottled on 1 September 2014

But let’s hear what Peter himself had to say about his unique creation: " I also grow oats and did an experiment to see if using oat husks would speed up lautering (separation of mash and liquid), as rye mash is extremely slow. I did a mash with about 65% oats with the remainder being equal amounts of rye, barley and wheat (I grow 4 types of grain). The husks on the oats did hasten the lautering. That was the end of the main part of the experiment. I did a couple of small mashes, then fermented and double distilled enough to make a 50 litre barrel. A small tour group spotted the cask just after its regulation 2 years had elapsed and asked if they could have a taste. WOW. I left it another 6 months then bottled it straight from the cask. I have made another barrel of Oat Whisky and plan to make some more very soon, but that also is at least 3 years away before it matures."

Tasting Notes

Pale straw in colour, the nose is reminiscent of porridge and is a little sweeter than the rye whisky with evident nose prickle from the higher ABV. Dry spice and cereal/oat flavour dominate the palate with a medium and warming finish. This small batch whisky is unlike any other. It opens up in the glass and gradually grows on you. Belgrove Distillery

Belgrove is at the micro end of the spectrum of Tasmanian distilleries and is one of a range of small but intriguing producers. The most hands-on of these is Peter Bignell’s paddock to bottle rye whisky operation. Both barley and rye are grown on site, harvested, malted, distilled, and the resulting spirit aged in wood and bottled at the distillery by hand. The farm and distillery equipment are bio-fuelled using waste cooking oil from a nearby fish and chip shop! Water used for production is rainfall captured on the roofs of the farm and distillery buildings. And the residual pulp from the distilling process is fed to Peter's livestock as an alternative to their normal feed. They, in turn, provide fertilizer for the next crop of rye - a truly environment friendly operation!

There is invariably something new and exciting coming out of Belgrove and we shall try and have them on the website as they become available.
