The Hobart Single Malt First Release by Devil’s Distillery is described as Batch Nº: 18-001 bottled on 2nd August 2018. There is a neck label attached by string attesting to its First Release status and the entire ensemble comes in a generic Hobart whisky tube.

The liquid is drawn from several 20 and 40 L ex-Bourbon casks. I tried it in ideal conditions – on a wet Monday morning at the distillery itself. I was reminded of all those similar distillery experiences in distant Scotland, sampling with the distiller or the manager, as the golden drop warmed the cockles of my heart – if not my ice-cold feet! And so it was at Devil’s Distillery, after a highly successful Tasmanian Whisky Week with an exciting new label joining the ranks of local whiskies.

This is a two-bottle affair – one for drinking and the other for the collector’s cupboard under the stairs. After all, only 423 bottles of the First Release were ever produced, the distillery is “Sold Out” and most of those will have already been consumed. The details of the expression, including an individual bottle number, are  on the side of each bottle.

This amazing whisky received a Liquid Gold rating of 94 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2019.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose: Enticing honeycomb and vanilla fudge wrapped in a hint of sweet beeswax. Light and fresh with the promise of violet crumble.

Palate: Lovely, creamy and mouth-filling soft, sweet spirit with a solid base of clean malt underpinning the vanilla crème brulee notes that shout ‘well-made bourbon cask single malt’. A pleasantly light, beguiling and eventually deeply satisfying dram.

Finish: Medium to long with lingering toffee notes and enough white oak tannins to guard against any cloying effect. An entirely satisfying conclusion that invites another visit.

Devil's Distillery

A colourful name for what is in many ways a conventional malt whisky distillery producing the “Hobart” single malt whisky along traditional lines with all the advantages which that entails. Whilst the distillery is suitably conservative in its approach to the making of its signature Hobart whisky, it is much more adventurous with its other spirits, but that’s another story, as is what lies behind its sister enterprise, the Tasmanian Moonshine Company with its barrel-aged new make (Tasmanian Malt). Both companies were the brain-child of local businessman, Rocky Caccavo.

Devil’s Distillery not only pulls together all of the recognisable components which make up a Tasmanian single malt but adds some interesting twists in terms of managing the distillation run so as to get the “middle cut” just right, and then the equally important maturation regime. Devil’s Distillery uses medium charred American oak barrels with a range of sizes from 20 to 100 litre capacity casks. The finishing casks are mostly European oak, which previously held fortified wines.
