This is a very special piece of Tasmanian whisky history being the very last cask filled at the Redlands Estate before production moved to Kempton.

The ex-Bourbon 20 litre private barrel was selected in September 2015 by the exclusive Cratur Whisky Investment Trust. It was a mark of confidence in what was seen as an energetic but challenged enterprise with a young and dedicated team of enthusiasts who successfully undertook the transfer to Kempton. The privilege of owning – and eventually bottling – the last release from Redlands Estate was too much of a temptation for Cratur which was rewarded two and a half years later when, on the advice of the original distiller, Dean Jackson, the cask was decanted and the liquid treasure bottled under the distillery’s Private Collection label on 1 March 2018 at full cask strength to yield a very limited 27 bottles.

Each numbered bottle comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Dean Jackson.

This is the first in MyWhiskyJourney’s series of Special Bottlings of Tasmanian whiskies. We hope in time to bring you others from the same source and from some of the other noted Tasmanian distilleries.

Redlands

Redlands Estate whisky was originally produced at the actual Redlands Estate at Plenty in the Derwent Valley in southeast Tasmania.

Following a change in ownership in 2015, the whisky production relocated to Dysart House at Kempton with a slight change in name. A further change took place in March 2018 to “Old Kempton” to reflect the distillery’s identity with the local community and to remove confusion with the Redlands Estate in the Derwent Valley.

The current owners of Old Kempton Distillery are ramping up whisky production at Dysart House, where they have also created an attractive visitors centre and tasting room. The convict-built stables at the rear now form the still house.

Bottles of Redlands are still extremely rare but that will change as the spirit matures to a point where the team feel that it is time for new releases to appear, but under the Old Kempton label.
