Glenglassaugh Massandra Connection Sherry Style Finish is a limited-edition malt whisky that has been crafted with a unique finishing process in sherry casks from the Massandra winery in Crimea. The sherry style casks used for this finishing process impart distinctive flavours and characteristics to the whisky, resulting in a rich and complex profile.

The Massandra Connection Sherry Style Finish was aged in oak barrels to develop its initial flavours. After the initial aging process, the whisky was then transferred to sherry style casks sourced from the Massandra winery. These casks have previously been used to age fortified wines, which gives them a unique influence on the whisky. The whisky is left to mature in these casks for an additional period, allowing it to absorb the flavours and aromas of the wine. In this particular example distillation took place in December 1972 with bottling 39 years later in July 2012. A mere 328 bottles emerged.

The sherry style cask finish adds a rich and luscious sweetness to the whisky, with notes of dried fruits such as raisins, dates, and figs. There are also hints of caramel, toffee, and chocolate, along with spicy undertones of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The sherry influence adds depth and complexity to the whisky, creating a harmonious balance between the whisky's original flavours and the sherry cask characteristics.

The Glenglassaugh Massandra Connection Sherry Style Finish is typically bottled at a higher proof to preserve its full-bodied flavours and is presented in an elegant bottle, adorned with a label that reflects the connection to the Massandra winery. This limited-edition whisky is highly sought after by collectors and whisky enthusiasts alike, due to its unique and indulgent profile that showcases the influence of the Massandra sherry style casks.

The ownership of the Massandra Winery reverted to Russia from the Ukrainian government with the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, which makes this collection all the more intriguing - and valuable – from an historic perspective.

Distillery

Glenglassaugh Distillery

Glenglassaugh Distillery is about 20 minutes’ drive from the solid country town of Banff. The distillery is on a bluff above a beach of sand and rock and overlooks the small fishing village of Sandend. It is a tranquil place, yet only a few hundred metres from the busy coastal road.

The distillery was built between 1873 and 1875, at a cost of £10,000 by Col. James Moir of the Glenglassaugh Distillery Company, with H. Mathieson as the first manager. Col. Moir ran the distillery with his two nephews until 1892, when it was purchased by Highland Distillers Company Limited. It suffered periods of lengthy closure from 1907 to 1931, and from 1936 to 1959, after which it was completely rebuilt in 1960. Thereafter, the distillery continued to produce whisky until 1986 when it was mothballed. 

The distillery sat silent for over 20 years until it was purchased by a group of investors and started production again in December 2008. In 2013, the BenRiach Distillery Company took over Glenglassaugh Distillery. In 2016 Brown-Forman acquired the Glenglassaugh Distillery alongside The GlenDronach and BenRiach distilleries.
