Distilled in May 1983 and after 31 years in a sherry barrel it was bottled in July 2014 producing a modest 62 bottles from cask no 406258.

It comes in a  handsome hardwood and leather presentation case.

Caol Ila is the biggest of the Islay distilleries and virtually all its production used to go to blending, with particular reference to Johnnie Walker, Diageo’s top whisky brand. From time to time, independent bottlings, such as this one, appeared on the market with remarkable success, so much so that Diageo  itself was encouraged to produce its own distillery bottled single malt expressions under the Caol Ila label, which it has been doing since 2002.

The distillery dates from 1846 and had a somewhat chequered history during the 19^th century until DCL (now Diageo) took it over in 1927 after which it became an important production base for the group.
