Ardbeg 1978 Single Islay Malt

$2,600 AUD

43% ABV

70 cl

It was distilled in 1978, just one year before Hiram Walker bought 100% of the shares in the company, buying out both The McDougall Family and Distillers Company Ltd.

Bottled in 1999 and so a genuine 20-year-old although the label displays no age statement. Nevertheless, it is now very scarce.

Tasting Notes

Nose: There is an unmistakeable Bourbon oakiness to this dram and in combination with the peat offers something that flies off the scale – extraordinary. Although the malt can be detected, it is rather powerless against the surging of peat and bourbon.

Palate: The brilliance of this whisky is its ability to show genuine subtlety and poise yet leave no-one in any doubt of its origin and intention. As well as a very rich, almost grassy, malt and some well-groomed oak, there are delicious hints of roast coffee and hickory.

Finish: This classic among classic ARDBEGS the balance of the nose and the palate is exactly how ARDBEG should be and the finish is magnificent. A real depth of character. Keep on the palate for as long as possible to magnify the sweetness and complexity. (Whiskys)

Ardbeg Distillery

The renaissance of Ardbeg is one of the most pleasing success stories of the Scotch whisky industry in recent times. Ardbeg had enjoyed a very buoyant existence in the 19th century, despite its relative remoteness, as noted by Alfred Barnard when he visited it in 1885. Ardbeg had been mothballed in 1981 and remained so until 1989 when it reopened but by then under the ownership of Allied Distillers. They closed it in 1996 and sold it the following year to Glenmorangie plc.  Things then started to happen with the opening of a visitors’ centre in 1998, some deft marketing (including the launch of the Ardbeg Committee in 2000) and the introduction of some imaginative NAS expressions under a captivating new label.

Ardbeg, like Glenmorangie, has continued to flourish under French ownership following the acquisition of both by LVMH in 2004.
