White Horse Cellar Blended Scotch Whisky Flat Bottle Early 1940s

“By Appointment to His Majesty the King”, but which King? We assume King George VI, as we believe this bottle dates from 1941. It has a good fill to the bottom of the neck and for its age is in remarkably good condition, except for some slight abrasions and discolouration to the labels. The white horse figure is boldly embossed on the back of the bottle.

This is a US import by Browne Vintners of New York. The size is given as 4/5 quart and the strength shown is 86.8 proof. There is also a State of Maryland liquor excise tax stamp showing the volume as 1/5 gallon. The spring cap is tightly covered by heavy foil which is intact.

The bottle no is AX 883279.

A much-loved blend from the old DCL stable – forgive the pun – which Diageo still promotes in many overseas markets, including Japan.

It sold 1.5 million cases in 2015 but dropped to 1.3 million in 2016. Hopefully, that decline can be arrested.
