Here is a nice museum piece from Auchentoshan at 70 proof and in both imperial and metric volumes, dating from the 1970’s if not earlier. It is from the Eadie Cairns era and well before the distillery was acquired by Morrison’s, the Glasgow whisky brokers and distillers of Bowmore fame.

Not many of these bottles will have survived, complete with box, although it shows some signs of age.

Distillery

Auchentoshan Distillery

This well-known Lowland distillery stands out for a number of reasons. Firstly and most famously, Auchentoshan is the only distillery in Scotland, which exclusively uses triple distillation. Secondly, it is now the only Lowland distillery, which draws its water from a Highland source. Thirdly, all of its production goes for bottling as a single malt and, lastly, it is highly accessible from the metropolis of Glasgow and a sheer delight to visit for anyone wishing to understand traditional malt whisky production, albeit with a twist!

The distillery has stood on the banks of the River Clyde since it’s founding in 1817, originally as Duntocher distillery. New ownership in 1834 led to a name change and it has been Auchentoshan (or Auchintoshan) ever since. Various changes in ownership took place over the next 150 years until 1984 when the Glasgow whisky brokers and distillers, Stanley P. Morrison Limited, acquired it from the well-known Glasgow publicans, Eadie Cairns.  Through the Morrison ownership, it has become part of Beam Suntory’s whisky assets.
