White Horse Advertising Postcard 1908

White Horse Advertising Postcard 1908

$60 AUD

A very fine early example of White Horse advertising humour in the form of kilted Highlanders at play under the title “Scotch Fun in the Olden Times”.  Inebriated half-naked kilted men drinking from kegs of White Horse would be unthinkable in today’s health conscious, politically correct world and contrary to any concept of responsible alcohol consumption.

The reverse of the postcard shows a Geneva postmark of 1908 and the 5c stamp of the new definitive series introduced in 1907 showing William Tell's son holding a crossbow and an apple pierced by an arrow. There is hand-written text in English and Swiss German, possibly from the Swiss importer of White Horse to a customer at the Hotel Continental at Montreux.

Distillery

White Horse

A much-loved blend from the old DCL stable – forgive the pun – which Diageo still promotes in many overseas markets, including Japan.

It sold 1.5 million cases in 2015 but dropped to 1.3 million in 2016. Hopefully, that decline can be arrested.

There is more about White Horse and the brand’s history and associated distilleries under the White Horse Story.
