Port Dundas Distillery

This was a major production component in the Diageo world and its demise came as a surprise to many. When Barnard visited it, Port Dundas was the biggest distillery in the United Kingdom. When I turned up 100 years later it still retained that distinction! And the number of employees were similar – 250 in Barnard’s day and 270 when I was there. But productive capacity had multiplied many times. Much innovation and expansion had taken place and more was planned and did take place in subsequent years.  Consequently, I concluded that “…it seems that the owners’ long term aim is to make Port Dundas the flag-ship of the Group….”. How wrong can one be!

Having been established in 1811, its 200 years of existence was celebrated by its final closure in 2011! However, they did manage to produce a 200th anniversary single grain for the occasion, it being all of 19 years old.

A sorry end to what had been a very impressive operation, and all the more so as it had been one of the six founding distilleries which combined to create DCL in 1877.
