Ghost Distilleries

Here we feature the 35 “ghost” distilleries of Scotland, which are those distilleries which have long since disappeared from productive life but whose whiskies still exist, albeit for limited periods, before stocks eventually run out. And so like real ghosts, the body has been extinguished but the spirit lives on!

Where we can we shall offer bottles and/or associated memorabilia from the MyWhiskyJourneys collection at prices, which reflect scarcity.  Keeping with the ghostly theme, we include here the three distilleries – Brora, Port Ellen and Rosebank – whose impending reincarnation has recently been announced. However, they remain on the “ghost” inventory until production eventually resumes and the whisky becomes available again. There are so many others we would like to see return from the dead!

Further information about the Ghost Distilleries can be found in this article published in the prestigious drinks magazine Alquimie (Link).

Full profiles of these distilleries will appear in the e-book historical reprint of The Whisky Distilleries of Scotland and Ireland  published in 1987 (Link) as the centenary rewrite of Alfred Barnard’s classic work The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom (Link).

Do bear in mind that where distilleries have featured a name change in the course of their history and their whiskies have appeared under more than one name, we show the different names in the filter as follows:
            Brechin or North Port
            Glenesk or Hillside
            Linlithgow or St Magdalene
            North of Scotland or Strathmore
