Ardbeg 17 Years Old Islay Single Malt

$950 AUD

40% 70 cl

Macdonald and Muir bought the abused Ardbeg Distillery in 1997 and set about nursing it back to health. This 17 year old bottling was the first release that came bounding out of the distillery and it is said (especially by Jim Murray) that Jim Murray had a major hand in the creation of this, a rather fruity and less smoky Ardbeg.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The gentlest of peats, yet deep and confident with an enticing sweetness – a heady mixture of malt and vanilla. Vaguely salty and very complex with oak present but very much in harness. Just a hint of bourbon and even a fainter hint of tangy orange to widen the spectrum.
Palate: There is a much greater presence of peat in the taster than the nose suggests. The smokiness quickly hits the palate and then tapers off. That said, the middle shows an excellent chewy malt alongside a touch of cocoa.
Finish: The peat returns and guarantees an enormously long finale. The taste of the malt clings and hints of liquorice and dry toast are detected. This form of oakiness continues but never becomes sappy or too dry as the peat balances this out beautifully.

Ardbeg Distillery

The renaissance of Ardbeg is one of the most pleasing success stories of the Scotch whisky industry in recent times. Ardbeg had enjoyed a very buoyant existence in the 19th century, despite its relative remoteness, as noted by Alfred Barnard when he visited it in 1885. Ardbeg had been mothballed in 1981 and remained so until 1989 when it reopened but by then under the ownership of Allied Distillers. They closed it in 1996 and sold it the following year to Glenmorangie plc.  Things then started to happen with the opening of a visitors’ centre in 1998, some deft marketing (including the launch of the Ardbeg Committee in 2000) and the introduction of some imaginative NAS expressions under a captivating new label.

Ardbeg, like Glenmorangie, has continued to flourish under French ownership following the acquisition of both by LVMH in 2004.
