Distillery

Glen Albyn Distillery

Long since dismantled, along with its near neighbor, Glen Mhor, as part of the bloodletting in the early 1980’s, which saw so many distilleries disappear from the Diageo inventory. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit it after it had closed in 1983 but just before demolition and it is featured in “The Whisky Distilleries of Scotland and Ireland” Link.

Whilst the whisky was traditionally used almost entirely for blending, some casks were set aside after closure for bottling in the Rare Malts series and for independent bottlers. The distillery was originally founded in 1846, but operated for less than 10 years before falling silent. A new distillery was built in 1883 when the name was resurrected and the new Glen Albyn remained in production through two changes of ownership, stopping only briefly between 1917 and 1919 when the workforce was redeployed to make submarine nets and mines for the Royal Navy

There are few independent bottlings and even fewer official bottlings but we have a small collection from both sources.
